about

The original score for Monsters, a stage show created by Emme Hoy (Writer), Matthew Lutton (Director) & Stephanie Lake (Choreographer).
Presented by Malthouse Theatre, in collaboration with Stephanie Lake Theatre Company. 24 Nov-11 Dec 2022, Melbourne, Australia.

“Rosalind Hall’s unsettling composition lets dark synth and frightening noisescape do the dirty work” The Age.

“Rosalind Hall’s score is equally unnerving, creating a rich tapestry for dancers to play with as they flit in and out of light or set” Artshub.

About the album:
The three main elements of the score are weathered pianola, voice and synthesisers. The pianola was left outside to degrade for a year before being recorded inside a partially underground wine barrel cellar. Hitting and dragging various mallets on the piano strings and back of the piano body created the scraping and knocking sounds of the score. The voice is a theme throughout, either breathing (recordings of the pianola bellows opening and closing), pure voice or sampled snippets of whispered voice. The Korg Minilogue XD is used for the Monster drones. All other sythesisers are from the Melbourne Electronic Sound Studio collection, including the Buchla 200 System, Buchla Easel, Korg MS-20, Arp Odyssey, Moog Voyager, Moog System 55 and Moog Mother 32. Other instruments recorded were saxophone (prepared and dismembered), musical saw, tuning forks, monochord, velcro, firecrackers, and a river.

About the show:
In a thrilling fever dream, a woman and her guide journey into a chasm that has opened in a city and stolen her sister. Alison Whyte is joined on stage by dancers Samantha Hines, Josie Weise, and Kimball Wong, who conjure the hallucinations and horrors that echo in the mind.
